Abstract

In forensic anthropology, estimating a living adult’s stature is crucial for constructing the biological profile, facilitating suspect identification through their handprints left at the crime scene. The Present study was undertaken to establish stature estimation formulas using handprint measurements in a Gujarati population. This study focused on the adult Gujarati individuals residing in Gujarat, India. A total of 400 adult Gujarati participants, comprising 220 males and 180 females aged 20–30 years, were enrolled in the present study. Six parameters were measured in this study: stature and five handprint measurements. These measures were taken using standard anthropometric procedures, including Thumbprint length, Index fingerprint length, Middle fingerprint length, Ring fingerprint length, and little fingerprint length. All the collected data were statistically analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software. The Pearson correlation coefficient determined the relationship between handprint measurements and stature. The correlation coefficients are higher in the mixed sample (0.626–0.784) compared to the male (0.356–0.597) and female (0.268–0.439) groups. Males exhibited significantly higher stature and handprint length compared to females. In conclusion, the present Gujarati dataset establishes population-specific regression models linking handprint parameters, especially middle finger length, to stature.
